One of the largest ancient tombs in Japan, built around the beginning of the 7th century. Since Japan is prone to earthquakes, the structure of over 30 stones, including gigantic stones, was made in an arch to prevent collapse. This shows the high level of civil engineering and transportation technology at the time. A technique was used to shave the surface of the stone, but it was not processed precisely yet.

At that time, stone structures were a symbol of power. With the two top surface stones weighing approximately 77 and 64 tons, it is surmised that only the powerful Soga clan could have constructed it, and it is thus believed to be the tomb of Soga no Umako.

The name of Ishibutai is said to have originated from a myth that a fox disguised itself as a woman and danced on top of the stone ceiling.
