miyakozuka tumulus

Miyakozuka Tumulus

An ancient tomb built in the latter half of the 6th century. It is believed to be the tomb of Soga no Iname, also from the powerful Soga clan. At that time, tumuli were built to show off their power, and there were sizes and shapes in vogue. The unique and unusual pyramid-shaped shape of this tumulus shows an awareness of East Asian trends and it was one of the first tumulus in Japan to adopt imported culture.

The walls of the stone chamber are made of hard granite, and the coffins are made of soft tuff. These stones remain in good condition. You can enter the stone chamber and touch it rather than looking through the fence with our tour guides.
