Tour Itinerary
Touching the lives of locals in Asuka (2-Day)

Archaeology and historical sites are not the only charms of Asuka Village. Taking a glimpse of the locals' lives through various interactions is equally intriguing.

This 2-Day sample itinerary features such charms while covering several important archaeological sites.

DAY1

9:30

Ishibutai Tumulus

One of the largest ancient tombs in Japan, built around the beginning of the 7th century. Since Japan is prone to earthquakes, the structure of over 30 stones, including gigantic stones, was made in an arch to prevent collapse.

DAY1

10:30

Kahitsu-an Coffee Experience

At this beautifully renovated "kominka" (old house in Japanese), coffee made with home-roasted beans is served following the traditional style of Japanese tea ceremony. The owner came up with this unique combination as an ideal way to free guests from excessive formalism and allow them to experience the true essence of tea ceremony which deeply reflects the spirit of Zen.
With the scenery of the village spreading out beyond the window as a backdrop, seasonal flowers decorate the room.

DAY1

13:00

Shakyo ("sutra copying") experience

Experience Shakyo at the temple where sutra copying was said to be first performed in Japan. Recent studies have shown that the human brain is more likely to come up with inspirations and new ideas when it is in a state of absentmindedness, without any distraction. As you mindlessly perform Shakyo while feeling the breeze of Asuka, something you never thought of may come to mind.
After the sutra copying, take a break and enjoy matcha green tea with Japanese confectionery to recap the experience.

DAY1

15:00

Asuka-dera Temple

Japan's first authentic temple built in 587 at the request of Soga no Umako who protected Buddhism and was buried in the Ishibutai Tumulus.

DAY2

9:30

Kusaki-zome

Kusaki-zome (“plant dyeing”) is a method of dyeing cloth using a solution made by boiling natural plants and trees including red rice, madder, plum, and chestnut taro. Those vegetations grown in Asuka are mentioned in Manyoshu, the oldest anthology of poetry in the country compiled during the 7th and 8th centuries. Replicating the ancient method as possible, visitors can experience the traditional Kusaki-zome using seasonal plants and trees brought from different parts of the village. Choose your favorite color and design, and bring back home the beautiful handkerchiefs that you dye on the day.

DAY2

13:00

Kengoshizuka and Koshitsukagomon Tumulus

A beautiful octagonal mound characteristic of the imperial tombs of this era. Until recent years, the mound had collapsed and the stone chamber was exposed, but archaeological research has accurately reconstructed its appearance at the time of construction, and it was opened to the public in 2022.

DAY2

14:00

Kitora Tumulus / Kitora Tumulus Mural Paintings Experience Hall

A tumulus built between the end of the 7th century and the beginning of the 8th century. It is an ancient tomb with richly colored murals.

DAY2

15:00

Inabuchi no Tanada

Terraced rice fields, known as “Tanada” are rice paddies created in a stepped pattern on slopes such as hillsides. Inabuchi no Tanada in Asuka village is selected as one of the top 100 Tanada in Japan. Enjoy the peaceful scenery which changes from season to season.

DAY2

15:30

Mingling with locals

Moreover, visit a local farm and get to know about their way of life in “Satoyama” where people live sustainably with the nearby nature. A unique experience with a local farmer will be arranged (The content varies depending on the season).
